1988 was a MAGICAL season for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Orel Hershiser in particular.
NLCS MVP
World Series MVP
World Series Champion
NL Cy Young
NL All Star
but most noteworthy is Orel Hershiser’s 59 consecutive innings streak breaking the all time record previously held by Don Drysdale.
On September 28th, 1988 Orel Hershiser finished off the 10th inning vs the San Diego Padres to set a new MLB record of 59 consecutive scoreless innings!
A couple fun facts about the streak:
The streak ended in just his first inning of work the following season.
The streak actually extended an additional 8 scoreless innings in Game 1 of the 1988 NLCS to make it actually an “unofficial” streak of 67 combined innings. *The streak only officially counts regular season games.
Although Orel completed 9 innings in each of his starts during the streak, he did not match Don Drysdale’s record of 6 consecutive complete game shutouts due to the final game of his streak lasting 16 innings.
